Dr. Joseph Nyehita Maitaria

josephDr. Joseph Nyehita Maitaria is a lecturer of Kiswahili in the Department of Kiswahili, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Kenyatta University. He holds a Bachelor of Education degree in Kiswahili and Christian Religious Education from Kenyatta University; Mphil. from Tromso University; Master of Arts and PhD degrees in Kiswahili literary genres from Kenyatta University.

Dr. Maitaria teaches both undergraduates students who are pursuing Kiswahili for their degree courses. He also supervises post graduate students who are enrolled for Masters and PhD degrees in Kiswahili at Kenyatta University and other universities. He is a committee member of various Kiswahili associations and presently he is the Secretary General of Kiswahili in East Africa (CHAKAMA) and also served as a co-opted member in convening conferences CHAKITA (Kenyatta Univeristy - 2012); Conference on Researching African Literature (Pwani University in collaboration with Kenyatta University - 2014) and CHAKAMA (Mount Kenya University - 2015). He has also peer-reviewed articles for publications such as MULIKA (Institute of Kiswahili, University of Dar es Salaam) and OJAA.

Dr. Maitaria has published widely in the area of genres of Kiswahili literature both national and international journals. He has co-authored articles in the area of Kiswahili literature and some of his books can be found from Longhorn Kenya Ltd. He has submitted various manuscripts in the area of Kiswahili oral literature, short stories and novels which have been accepted for publication.
